Designing Luxury: My Unexpected Journey in Beauty & Fragrance

When I first stepped into the beauty and fragrance industry, I had no idea how much it would shape me as a designer. My background was rooted in e-commerce and digital marketing, but working in luxury branding introduced new creative challenges that expanded my skill set. From 2011 to 2014, I served as the Lead Digital Designer at Perfumania, where I developed high-impact campaigns for BOGO sales, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and seasonal promotions. Later, I transitioned to Temptu, a leader in airbrush makeup used in fashion and modeling.

Despite having little personal interest in makeup or fashion, I became deeply invested in the strategy and execution of digital design within this industry. It was an experience that refined my ability to think fast, adapt to tight deadlines, and elevate my design work to match the high-end brands we promoted.

Refining Luxury Brands

At Perfumania, my role extended far beyond creating banner ads and email campaigns. I collaborated with stakeholders and leadership to enhance the site’s user interface and develop modern, upscale email templates that reflected the premium nature of celebrity-endorsed fragrances, including those by Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Brittney Spears, Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Jay-Z, .

Key Contributions at Perfumania:

  • Enhanced the site UI to create a cleaner, more luxurious shopping experience.
  • Designed seasonal and promotional campaigns aligned with high-profile fragrance launches.
  • Developed a comprehensive style guide to ensure consistency across digital and in-store branding.
  • Created digital campaigns that seamlessly complemented physical store signage and exclusive in-store sales.
  • By introducing and applying a new email marketing template, we achieved a 50% increase in customer sales and 25% rise in the sign-up rate.

Crafted compelling and visually captivating designs endorsed by celebrities, resulting in over $50,000 in generated sales.

Temptu & The Shift Tword Minimalism

Following my time at Perfumania, I returned to the beauty industry at Temptu, where I deepened my understanding of luxury product presentation. Unlike Perfumania, which focused on high-volume sales, Temptu emphasized exclusivity and premium branding. Here, I refined a sleek, minimalist design approach that prioritized:

  • High-end product presentation over price-driven promotions.

  • A modern, sophisticated aesthetic for digital and e-commerce layouts.

  • Immersive, interactive designs that elevated Temptu’s premium image.

The Impact on My Design Philosophy

This chapter of my career fundamentally reshaped my design thinking. Working in a fast-paced environment taught me how to execute high-fidelity designs under pressure without compromising quality. I moved beyond traditional sales-driven tactics to develop branding that evoked a sense of exclusivity and desirability. The ability to react quickly while maintaining a luxury aesthetic became one of my strongest assets.

Showcasing My Work

Below are examples of the digital campaigns, banner ads, and site design mockups from my time in the beauty and fragrance industry. These projects illustrate my ability to merge reactionary design with luxury branding, e-commerce UI enhancements, and high-impact marketing strategies.

Temptu Pro UI – With input from stakeholders and the creative director, I had the opportunity to refresh the Temptu Pro section of the website, giving it a modern, polished look that aligned with the brand’s premium aesthetic..

Temptu Pro UI – In addition to refreshing the UI, I designed a variety of dynamic banner ads for the online carousel, enhancing user engagement and brand consistency.

Temptu E-mail Marketing – Leveraging the new design system and branding guide, I created sleek, product-focused email designs that reinforced Temptu’s premium aesthetic and elevated its digital marketing strategy.

Conlusion

While I may not have set out to work in beauty and fragrance industry, this experience challenged and expanded my creative skills in ways I never expected. I walked away with a deeper understanding of luxury branding, e-commerce marketing, and high-speed creative execution—skills that continue to shape my work today. Would I return to the beauty industry? Maybe. But what I learned there applies to any industry that values strong visual storytelling, strategic marketing, and rapid creative problem-solving—which, at the end of the day, is exactly what I love about being a designer.
