Revamping Gino’s Pizzeria: A UX-Driven Transformation for the Modern Diner

I was born and raised in New York, growing up on Long Island, surrounded by some of the best food in the world. I know I may seem biased, but there’s just something special about the way New York does bagels and breakfast sandwiches—and, most importantly, pizza. The perfect slice isn’t just about the ingredients—it’s about tradition, craftsmanship, and that unmistakable New York touch. Gino’s of Ronkonkoma embodies all of that and more. By far one of the best pizzerias on Long Island, Gino’s offers a wide variety of delicious menu items, from classic New York-style slices to specialty pies, hearty pasta dishes, and fresh, flavorful entrees. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick bite or sitting down for a meal with family and friends, Gino’s delivers an authentic taste of New York with every bite.

In 2016, I had the opportunity to redefine the digital and physical experience of Gino’s Pizzeria, a well-loved establishment with a strong reputation but a website and interior design that no longer reflected its evolving brand. The challenge was to modernize its web presence and environmental design while preserving the warm, inviting essence that made Gino’s a community staple.

The result? A responsive, user-friendly website with a live menu experience, improved accessibility, and a brand aesthetic that aligns with trendy, high-end coffee shops and modern restaurants. Let’s dive into the UX strategy, redesign process, and customer insights that shaped this transformation.

Revamping Gino’s Pizzeria: A UX-Driven Transformation for the Modern Diner

Before tackling the redesign, I conducted user interviews and surveys with Gino’s customers, employees, and stakeholders. The goal was to understand their frustrations with the old site and their expectations for a new experience.

  • Outdated Website & Poor Mobile Experience: Customers struggled with the non-responsive design, making it hard to browse
    the menu on smartphones.
  • Difficult Navigation & Lack of Online Ordering: Users found it challenging to locate key information, and many expected online ordering, which was missing.
  • Desire for a “Trendy, High-End Coffee Shop” Ambience: The owners wanted the brand identity to shift towards a more premium, welcoming atmosphere both online and in-store.

UX Strategy & Redesign Approach

A Fully Responsive Live Menu Experience

Before: Customers had to zoom in on a static, hard-to-read menu on mobile.

After: I implemented a dynamic, responsive menu that adjusts to any screen size, allowing customers to filter items, view real-time updates, and download a PDF version for convenience.

Simplified, Intuitive Navigation

The new website features:

  • Clear, top-level navigation for quick access to the menu, locations,
    and contact info.
  • A streamlined layout to enhance the browsing experience and reduce visual clutter.
  • High-quality imagery of dishes to encourage engagement and social sharing.

Brand Evolution: Aesthetic & Environmental Design

To align with the owners’ vision of a trendy, high-end coffee shop feel, I extended the design beyond the website into Gino’s physical space:

  • Warm, modern color palettes and typography reflected on both the website and interior signage.
  • Digital menu displays inside the restaurant for a seamless customer experience.
  • Updated storefront branding to match the refreshed online presence.

How the Redesign Enhanced User Experience

Use Case 1: A Mobile-First Experience for On-the-Go Customers

Scenario: Maria, a frequent customer, wants to browse the menu while on the move.

Old Experience: The site was difficult to navigate on her phone, requiring excessive zooming.

New Experience: The responsive menu allows her to filter dishes easily, share menu items on social media, and place an order within minutes.

Use Case 2: A Downloadable PDF Menu for Easy Decision-Making

Scenario: James wants to check the menu at home with his family before calling in an order.

Old Experience: No downloadable menu, requiring manual copying of items.

New Experience: He can now download a well-designed PDF menu instantly, making it easy to print or reference later.

Use Case 3: A Cohesive Digital & Physical Brand Identity
